Idempotency

An idempotent operation has the same intended effect when repeated with the same input.

ClientPayments APIpay, key=abccharged onceretry, key=abcsame result, no charge
An idempotent operation has the same intended effect when repeated with the same input. Values shown in the worked visual are illustrative unless the labels state otherwise.

How it works

Retries are safer when duplicate requests do not duplicate side effects. Idempotency keys let servers recognize repeated submissions.

A concrete example

Illustrative: retry payment key abc123 three times but create exactly one $25 charge.

Do not confuse it with Deduplication

idempotency is an operation guarantee; deduplication is one technique used to provide it.
