Regression predicts a continuous numeric quantity.

How it works

A regression model learns how inputs shift a numeric target. Its errors retain magnitude, so missing by 20 usually matters more than missing by 2.

A concrete example

Illustrative: a model predicts 18.4 minutes for a trip whose observed time is 20.0 minutes.

Do not confuse it with Classification

regression outputs a quantity; classification selects a category.
